WHO ARE THE MEMBERS?
Membership in the League of Women Voters, the most respected and effective grassroots organization in the country, is open to any gender ages 16 and up.
Our members make a visible difference by serving as community leaders using their experience to create positive, lasting change in our communities.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN?
Through participation in League projects, you will:
contribute valuable service to the community
gain knowledge and experience through the study and discussion of timely and important topics
discover new interests, develop new skills and learn about crucial issues in your community
make professional contacts and develop lasting friendships as you meet others in League who share your interests
WHAT DOES THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF FAIRFAX (LWVFA) DO?
Studies
We study key community issues at all levels of government in an unbiased manner. We have program committees that meet to explore a single topic and standing committees that continually follow issues.
Programs
LWVFA has monthly programs from September to June. LWVVA meets in neighborhood units throughout the Fairfax Area.
Voter Service Activities
In Virginia, there is a federal, state, or local election every year; so, annually the LWVFA:
1. Conducts voter registration drives.
2. Holds candidate forums.
3. Produces the following publications:
What's on the Ballot?: A list of all of the candidates, bond issues and constitutional amendments on the November ballot that we hand out to the public in the fall.
Vote 411: Questions posed by the League are answered by candidates and published in local newspapers and on our website prior to the November election.
Facts for Voters: A booklet listing our national, state and local officials and important public offices, which is published each January and distributed through the libraries and other outlets.
Action and Advocacy
The League can only act after study and member agreement on an issue, which is called "taking a position." To act locally, there must be a League position on the issue at the local, NCA, state or national level. Using these positions, we:
Testify before our elected officials.
Contact public officials regarding pending legislation or public policy decisions.
Write news releases and editorials.
Send action alerts to our members requesting that they take action as individuals, based on a League position.
WHO CAN JOIN THE LEAGUE?
Anyone, of any gender, age 16 or older may become a member of the League of Women Voters.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE?
It's up to you! Many members choose to support the League only with their annual dues. Your membership alone gives us the political influence needed to build a voice for citizens and a force for change. We cover a broad spectrum of issues and concerns; you may choose to become involved in one or more of them by actively participating in a group study, or listening to a panel of experts at a meeting or just reading about them in one of our publications.
WHAT DOES MEMBERSHIP INCLUDE?
You automatically become a member of the National Capital Area Inter-League Organization, LWV Virginia and LWV of the United States. You will receive their publications along with the newsletter from the Fairfax Area (LWVFA) The League of Women Voters called The Fairfax Voter which is usually published 10 times each year . You will have the knowledge that you are adding your voice to a powerful force of members from all 50 states, Washington DC, the Virgin Islands, and Hong Kong.
