THE TURNING POINT SUFFRAGIST MEMORIAL

The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial (TPSM) will be a testament to those who endured harsh imprisonment to secure voting rights for American women. Help us pay tribute to the more than 120 suffragists who were arrested in 1917 for being the first to picket the White House. They were taken to the Occoquan Workhouse in Lorton, Va., where they were beaten and force fed. Reports of the inhumane conditions at the Workhouse electrified the country and became the "turning point" in the struggle for the 19th Amendment. Some of these suffragists started the League of Women Voters in 1920 once suffrage was achieved. Click here for further information about the Memorial.

Support The Memorial

Plans for a memorial dedicated to the suffragists originated with a partnership between League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area (LWVFA) and the Northern VA Park Authority (NVRPA) in 2008. Now the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Committee (TPSM) (comprised of a partnership with many organizations) is working under the guidance of the NVRPA to erect a fitting tribute to the struggle of these women and to educate future generations. Plans are to build the memorial in Occoquan Regional Park not far from where the women were held. The targeted completion date for the entire project is 2020, the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
